What is a nonce in provably fair?

Without a nonce, the same server seed and client seed would produce the same result every time. The nonce makes bet #0, bet #1, bet #2… each hash to something new and unpredictable.

What you need to know:

  • The nonce usually restarts when you rotate your seed pair.
  • Some casinos start at 0, others at 1. A verifier must use the same convention, or every result will look "wrong".
  • In Plinko, one nonce covers one whole drop; the per-row numbers come from the same hash.

Example. Server seed S, client seed "alice": nonce 41 gives one drop, nonce 42 gives a completely unrelated drop. To verify bet #42, you need exactly S, "alice" and 42.

Every drop in the demo shows its nonce; verifiers replay a drop from its nonce.

  • What is a server seed? The server seed is the casino's secret random value behind every result. How it's committed with a hash, revealed on rotation and used to verify bets.
  • What is a client seed? The client seed is your input into every provably fair result. What it does, why it protects you, and why changing it never changes your odds.
  • What is seed rotation?Seed rotation replaces your active seed pair and reveals the old server seed, so you can verify past bets. When to rotate and what changes.
  • What is HMAC?HMAC mixes a secret key with a message into one hash. How crypto casinos use HMAC-SHA256 to combine server seed, client seed and nonce into a result.
