What is variance?

Variance and RTP are independent. Two games can return the same 99% on average while one moves your balance gently and the other in violent jumps.

Example - Plinko [risk levels](/plinko/risk-levels). On the same board, Low risk pays something near 1× on most slots: small, steady results, low variance. High risk pays little in the middle and huge amounts on rare edge slots: long dry spells, rare big hits, high variance. RTP can be nearly identical.

What high variance means in practice:

  • Short sessions tell you almost nothing about the table.
  • Session RTP can sit far from theoretical RTP for thousands of bets.
  • Drawdowns are deeper and risk of ruin is higher for the same bankroll.
  • The median session ends below the mean.

  • What is RTP (return to player)?RTP is the share of all bets a game pays back over the long run. How to calculate it from a Plinko payout table, and what RTP can't tell you.
  • Median vs mean: which "average" should you trust? Why the median session result is usually below the average in casino games, how a few big wins distort the mean, and which number to trust.
  • What is drawdown?Drawdown is how far your bankroll falls from its highest point. How to read median and max drawdown, with a worked example from a betting session.
